The people who worked on the Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown” plan to make a Syd Barrett movie

One of the people behind the new biopic about Fr To Bob Dylan A Complete Unknown is working on a film about the founder Pink Floyda, Syd Barrett.

Speaking on the podcast The Town With Matthew Belloniproducer Peter Jaysen – whose company, Veritas Entertainment, is working on the rights to Dylan’s music archive and life story for the film – revealed that both Barrett and the late singer Cass Elliot from The Mamas & The Papas candidates for film adaptation.

“Thanks to our involvement with the Bob film, we are currently working with acclaimed writer-director Wash Westmoreland on a film about Syd Barrettone of the founders of Pink Floyd,” said Jaysen.

Jaysen added: “We had a few Zoom meetings with Mama Cass Elliot’s heirs and met her daughter, Owen. We are close to getting the rights to her book, My Mama Cass.“

While he hasn’t specified details or release dates for these projects, both Barrett and Elliot are up for the biopic. Barrett formed Pink Floyd in 1965, before drug and mental health problems forced him to leave the band and hide from the public in Cambridge until his death in 2006. Elliott, known as Mama Cass, rose to stardom as part of The Mamas & The Papas, but she passed away in 1974 at the age of 32.

A Complete Unknown it opened in the US on Christmas to good reviews, and the actor Timothée Chalamet is reportedly in the running for an Oscar for his role as Dylan. Chalamet practiced singing for five years to portray Dylan as authentically as possible.

The real Dylan gave the film his blessing, announcing on Platform X: “There’s a movie opening soon about me called A Complete Unknown (what a title!). Timothée Chalamet plays the main role. Timmy is a brilliant actor, I’m sure he will be as completely believable as I am. Or the younger me. Or some other me. The movie is based on the book Dylan Goes Electric by Elijah Waldo – a book that came out in 2015. It’s a fantastic retelling of the events of the early sixties leading up to the Newport fiasco. After watching the movie, read the book.”

A Complete Unknown is just one of several musical biopics coming in the next few years, including the film about Bruce Springsteenu under the name Deliver Mestarring The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White as Springsteen, focusing on the making of his 1982 album. Nebraskaand a four-part biopic Sam Mendesa about The Beatles, with a special film dedicated to each member.
