The performance of some lens cleaning products in detecting foreign substances and removing proteins is also different < Distribution < Text of article

Recently, as the number of contact lens wearers has increased, interest in multi-purpose lens cleaning solutions that can manage lens cleaning and storage in one product is increasing.

Lens cleaning fluid is a necessity directly related to eye health, and products from various brands are sold on the market. However, due to the lack of objective quality comparison information, the Korea Consumer Agency (Director Soo-Hyun Yoon) reviewed the protein cleaning power, safety, and sterilization of 11 multi-purpose cleaning fluids for soft lenses. Effectiveness was tested.

As a result of the test, the performance of removing proteins deposited on the lenses differed depending on the product, and the five products had a sterilizing effect against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Some products required improvement because foreign substances were detected or the contents were less than indicated. Arsenic, a hazardous substance, was not detected, and the durability of containers was found to meet applicable standards for all products.

According to the Korea Consumer Agency, two products, including ‘Aosep Plus Liquid’ (Alcon Korea Co., Ltd.) and ‘Opti Free Express Liquid’ (Alcon Korea Co., Ltd.), were relatively superior in terms of protein cleaning power, which reduces the performance of lenses when worn repeatedly.

Eight products, including ‘Neo Plus Gold’ (Dongkook Pharmaceutical), were rated ‘Good’, the second grade, and ‘Multi-Purpose Solution Liquid, which is comfortable on my eyes’ (CPLB), was rated the lowest ‘average’.

It was confirmed that four types of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia, and Candida, could be sterilized with cleaning solutions. As a result, Renew Fresh Solution (Bausch & Lomb Korea), Medi Lens Multi Liquid (Korea Medicare), and AOSEP Plus were used. Five products, including liquid, Optifree Express liquid, and Kirkland Signature multipurpose lens solution (Costco Korea), had a sterilizing effect.

Some products were found to fall short of safety and labeling standards, such as having less content than indicated or containing foreign substances.

Foreign substances were detected in Dream Eye Solution (K&JC), and The View Solution (iMedison) needed improvement as its net content was less than the indicated capacity.

All products met the standards for microbial limit and acidity (pH). Arsenic, a harmful element, was not detected, and there were no products whose containers were damaged or whose contents leaked when dropped on the floor.

Based on the price of 100 ml, Friends Pro B5 (JW Pharmaceutical) was the cheapest at 286 won, and Aosep Plus was the most expensive at 3,824 won, a difference of up to 13 times between products.

The Korea Consumer Agency said, “Based on the results of this investigation, we have recommended improvements to the relevant business operators for products that require improvement,” and added, “We plan to notify relevant ministries of the relevant details.”
