The phenomenon involves spreading the personal information of people suspected of being pedophiles and inciting acts against them. Among other things, videos have been made available to the public in which such encounters have been described. This kind of activity seems to be considered widely acceptable, because sexual crimes against minors are generally considered so reprehensible, says the crime commissioner Sampsa Square from the East Uusimaa police.
The police emphasize that the dissemination of sensitive information that violates private life, as well as the dissemination of false or derogatory information that insults a person, can meet the hallmarks of a crime. The police also urges you to take into account that in the activity of pedohunt, you might be guilty of inciting a sexual crime against a minor.
The dark side of the Pedohunt phenomenon – an international phenomenon spreading on social media
The so-called Pedohunt phenomenon is international and it spreads through various social media channels, especially among young people.
There is also a darker side to the phenomenon. Some of the people participating in the activity use the phenomenon to justify their own criminal activities, such as the use of violence. Pedophiles appear to be attractive targets also because they have a remarkably high threshold for reporting crimes against them to the police, so that the acts are easily excluded from society’s legal system.
For some of the actors, the goal of the animal hunt is not to enforce justice, but to find people as targets from whom money can be extorted, for example by threatening to publish a video of their encounter.
The police condemn sexual crimes against minors
The police strongly condemns sexual crimes against minors. Despite the fact that the actions of persons who commit such crimes are reprehensible, no one has the arbitrary right to target violence or other crimes against them.
From the point of view of social order and the legal system, it is essential that each actor acts in his own role. Investigating crimes, solving them and prosecuting them are the tasks of the police. Taking the law into one’s own hands is always problematic and often punishable under the Criminal Code.
– According to our understanding, the crimes related to the pedophile hunting phenomenon are largely covert criminal activities. In Finland, there have been a few criminal reports related to this phenomenon, the most serious of which is being investigated here at the Itä-Uusimaa police, Aukio continues.
In this case that happened on August 10 in Vantaa, the person concerned is not suspected of a crime. The criminal suspicion of the interested party would have required that there would have been a genuine child under the age of 16 in the case, with whom there would have been an attempt to have sexual intercourse. In this case, everyone who has communicated with the interested party has already reached the age of sixteen.
