The Philippines urges residents to evacuate urgently as Typhoon Man-Yi approaches

Man-Yi, the sixth tropical cyclone to hit the Philippines in a month, has intensified, with maximum sustained winds reaching 195 km/h and gusts of up to 240 km/h, according to state weather agency PAGASA.

The storm alert has been raised to the highest level for the provinces of Catanduanes and Camarines Sur in the central Bicol region.

Ariel Nepomuceno, head of the Bureau of Civil Defense, urged residents in the typhoon’s projected path to follow evacuation orders because Man-Yi could trigger dangerous flooding and storm surges.

“It’s more dangerous now for those in landslide-prone areas because the soil has been saturated by back-to-back typhoons,” Nepomuceno said, warning that storm surges could reach 3 meters.

PAGASA warned that the typhoon continues to represent a “potential life-threatening catastrophe” for the Bicol region. More than 500,000 people in the region’s six provinces have been evacuated, a disaster official said, adding that the number is expected to rise as local authorities mobilize more residents.

At 17:00 (11:00 Romanian time), PAGASA reported that the storm was located 120 km east of Catanduanes and is expected to make landfall on Saturday evening or Sunday morning.
