Climatologist on extreme temperatures: “The pleasant summers of the 70s and 80s will never happen again.”
Humans are the main culprit for extreme and increasingly frequent heat waves because for the last 150 years they have been constantly adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, which remains there forever and changes climatesaid climatologist from the Belgrade Faculty of Physics Vladimir Đurđević.
Đurđević told the Subotica portal Magločistač that the climate in the world has changed in the last 50-60 years.
“There were periods of high temperatures before, but the number of heat waves was less than one per year. We have had several years without heat waves or one in several years, while in recent years we have had up to four heat waves during the summer that last longer than before,” said Đurđević.
He stated that the pleasant summers of the 1970s and 1980s will never happen again.
He said that this process, although irreversible, can be stopped if the global implementation of the Paris climate agreement begins, which requires that the addition of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere and the burning of oil, coal and natural gas be stopped by 2050. The goal is to stop global warming below two degrees compared to the pre-industrial age of two centuries ago.
Adaptation
“There is a capacity to adapt and change our lives at that limit of below two degrees so that we suffer less consequences due to such situations. If we do not respect that, the adjustment will be very demanding and expensive for our country, which will affect people’s lives, agriculture, the economy, and everything else,” he said.
That is why Serbia’s budget should also foresee expenditures for adapting to climate change, he said.
Đurđević and stated that Government of Serbia in December 2023, adopted the “Program of Adaptation to Climate Change”, but the question of its application is raised.
