The accident happened near the Vilnius airport on Monday morning. The DHL cargo plane, which landed calmly but did not reach the runway of Vilnius airport, crashed into the ground and skidded for several hundred meters, sweeping away everything in its path. After hitting the ground, the plane caught fire. However, the cabin in which the crew was located separated from the burning part of the plane after the impact, so the crew members who were in it did not suffer burns.
Parts of the plane hit the house where 13 people were, a fire broke out, but all the residents were saved, they were accommodated in a hotel.
The crash site will be cordoned off for at least a few days, possibly even weeks, as the investigation continues.
The capital’s police have started a pre-trial investigation into possible improper maintenance of vehicles or roads and violations of international flight rules, aviation safety specialists and DHL are also conducting their own investigation.
When the police spoke to the crew of the plane that crashed in Vilnius on Monday, they did not indicate that the fire had started in the plane before it hit the ground.
The crashed Boeing 737 belonged to the Spanish airline Swift Air and was used by DHL for delivery. The aircraft was flying from the German city of Leipzig.
