The police are currently running a country-wide monitoring week for electric scooters. Through surveillance, the police want to influence road users’ attitudes and traffic habits, so that unnecessary dangerous situations would decrease and fatal traffic accidents would be avoided.

Illegal electric kickboarding causes dangerous situations in traffic, which could often be avoided by following the traffic rules. In the capital region, for example, three fatal electric scooter accidents have already occurred in a short period of time during the summer of 2024.

– We will monitor the traffic behavior of electric scooters in an intensified manner for a week. We intervene systematically and with a low threshold for detected traffic crimes and violations, says police inspector Heikki Kallio from the Police Board.

We want a change in the transport methods of electric scooters

− Electric kickboarding would not be a problem if road users followed the traffic rules and the obligations set for traffic control devices. However, the problem is that the rules are not followed, says Kallio.

During the e-scooter monitoring week, all types of illegal traffic behavior by e-scooter boarders are dealt with, but especially such activity that disturbs and endangers other road users and endangers the e-scooter boarder himself.

Kallio also appeals to parents to share information with young road users about where and how to drive safely in traffic.
