Today, the police rejected statements on social networks that the police should advise against visiting certain areas of Ljubljana. As they insist, Ljubljana is a safe city. According to them, the claims about daily sexual assaults in the city center are also untrue. The police ensure that they take care of security in the capital as much as possible.

The police deny statements on social networks that crimes against sexual integrity are taking place daily in the area of the center of Ljubljana. “These types of crimes are only isolated cases that do not occur in certain areas of the city – namely, no area stands out in terms of a greater number. Even otherwise, most crimes against sexual integrity are committed in private or other similar spaces and only in smaller measure on the streets,” they wrote down.

The police also reject allegations that information about rapes should not be made public. “In every public communication about rape and other crimes against sexual integrity, the rights of the victim to protect her identity and her well-being must first be respected,” are clear. Investigations of such crimes therefore communicate with the public strictly in the interest of the individual investigation, the protection of personal data and the protection of victims.

The police transparently informs the public about the number and investigations of crimes against sexual integrity, as they guarantee, also in their publicly available half-yearly and annual work reports. “The police treat all cases of crimes against sexual integrity with all seriousness and do everything in their power to find the perpetrators and treat them accordingly,” they also wrote in the press release.

The area of Metelkova Street is also highlighted as dangerous in the posts on social networks. It is typical for this part of the capital that there is a methadone dispensary and an asylum branch in the immediate vicinity. “In connection with this, we detect mainly individual cases of possession and sale of illegal drugs, but not organized groups that would commit such crimes,” they stated at the police.

The police do not keep special statistical data for the Metelkova area itself, but during a manual review of the handled cases, they found that this year, the police in this part of Ljubljana dealt with 331 misdemeanor proceedings for violations of the provisions of the Act on the Production and Trafficking in Illegal Drugs, 65 criminal acts of unauthorized production and trafficking of illegal drugs under the Criminal Code and two criminal offenses of facilitating the consumption of illegal drugs also under the Criminal Code. The rest of the crimes are mostly those against property, most of which are thefts.

As part of their duties, the police officers repeatedly carry out targeted and intensified controls regarding crimes related to illegal drugs, including civilian patrols. They also implement other preventive measures and cooperate with competent institutions, the municipality and owners of catering establishments. They mention the observation services that they perform together with the city police.

In order to prevent street crime even more effectively, a special working group was also established, with which, according to the police, they ensure an even greater presence of police officers in security-stressed areas, including in the Metelkova area.

The Ljubljana Police Administration says that they ensure the constant presence of the police in exposed places in the capital, regularly collect information, monitor the situation on the ground and adjust their work accordingly.

The police welcome cooperation with citizens and local communities, who regularly inform them of all events that could affect the safety of residents. However, they would like more cooperation of this kind, since every report and information can help to investigate and prevent unauthorized practices.

At the same time, the police emphasize that citizens themselves can do a lot for their own safety, especially by prudently avoiding various dangerous situations and circumstances that could threaten their safety. In the event that someone becomes a victim of a crime, according to the police, it is extremely important to notify the police immediately, preferably as soon as you suspect that a crime may have occurred.

Since social networks have become an important communication tool, and their reach is extremely large, the police also emphasize the necessity of responsible communication. People are urged not to fall for unverified information and not to spread it further, as this unnecessarily unsettles the public and instills fear in the local community.
