Lublin is a unique place on the map of Poland. Just 15 years ago it was a completely different city. Those arriving by bus or car from Warsaw were greeted by a damaged road and a not-so-pretty bus station in the center. Many neglected places meant that the beautiful city wasted its tourist potential.
Now the situation has changed 180 degrees. Access is convenient via an expressway, old roads are being renovated. A modern stadium, a trade fair and exhibition center were built, Litewski Square was modernized to provide more space for pedestrians, the Saxon and People’s Parks were revitalized, and after many years the famous “Tatra Mountains under Construction” was completed, which became the Center for the Meeting of Cultures. Many new buildings also appeared (including modern institutes of Lublin universities, Aqua Lublin), which completely changed the city’s landscape. It is also worth mentioning the Lublin Airport.
He joined these investments Metropolitan Railway Station. It was completed at the end of 2023 and welcomed its first travelers at the beginning of 2024. Thanks to its form, the building attracted attention and was widely commented on from the very beginning. It’s impossible not to pay attention to him a modernist form that contrasts not only with the historic façade of the railway station, but also with the remaining historic buildings in the area. As the Tremend studio responsible for the project points out, it was made “in a consciously different style from the existing railway station buildings with well-preserved protected historical features.”
Every year, the architecture industry recognizes the best projects and completed buildings. Among the numerous awards of this type, there are several that are truly a great honor to receive. For architects, the highest award is the Pritzker Prize, called the Nobel Prize in Architecture. It’s kind of the culmination of all the work. When it comes to current projects, such a competition is the World Architecture Festival, which is compared to the Oscars.
The 2024 edition has just come to an end (the competition took place on November 6-8) and the winners have been announced in several categories, such as: Future Design, Interior of the Year, Landscape of the Year, Completed Buildings and Special Awards. In 2024 in the Completed Buildings – Transport category, the winner was the Polish project by the Tremend studio. It defeated the projects of other famous studios such as Zaha Hadid Architects or Kohn Pedersen Fox.
The awarded project will now be able to fully present itself not only in Poland, but also internationally. At the end of September, it was announced that Lublin had impressed the European jury and received the title of European Capital of Culture 2029. It is the third Polish city after Krakow (2000) and Wrocław (2016) to receive this title. It can be expected that the planned festivals, performances, exhibitions, as well as many other attractions, including the entire preparation process, will attract even more people to the city.
The structure of the three-story station building with an area of 18,000 m2. sq m was divided into two cubicles surrounded by a glass conservatory, and all rooms will be separated from the main hall. The concept of “building within a building” it will significantly reduce maintenance costs and reduce noise, the architects add.
The new modern station has not only its appearance, but also its solutions. We’ll find it on the roof gardenalong which you will be able to walk, a green wall is supposed to be a reference to the nearby People’s Park.
