The popular Mira books become a new big feature film for the whole family

The audience can look forward to meeting Mira and her friends Naja and Louis in the film adaptation of the bestselling books Mira by Sabine Lemire and Rasmus Bregnhøi about the “teenager” Mira and her fantastic world.

The film is directed by feature film debutante Marie Limkilde, and the script is written by Ida Åkerstrøm Knudsen. The film premieres on December 12, 2025.

The production company Toolbox Film and Scanbox Entertainment can today announce the family film MIRA – a warm, funny and touching film about friendship, falling in love, jealousy and everything that goes with being a child and teenager.

The film is loosely based on the ultra-popular Mira books, which have sold over 80,000 copies to date and have been published in 15 countries.

MIRA has just finished filming in Christianshavn and has a cinema premiere on 12 December 2025.

The action

12-year-old Mira loves making trash figures and spends hours in the club’s craft room with her best friends, Naja and Louis. But everything changes when Naja becomes friends with the new, smart girl in the class. Mira suddenly feels left out and begins to doubt whether she can still be the same when everything around her changes. Should she drop her garbage figure display and instead try to be more like the other girls who talk about love and crushes?

Determined to win back Naja’s friendship, Mira puts everything into being accepted into the girls’ exclusive “love club” – a club where you can only join if you have tried being in love. But what do you do when you’ve never been in love and just can’t figure out how to fall in love, no matter how hard you try?

The Mira universe

MIRA is based on the bestselling books written by Sabine Lemire and illustrated by Rasmus Bregnhøi and published by Gyldendal in collaboration with Gyldendal Group Agency.

The Mira books present a colorful and imaginative world where you follow the curious and brave girl, Mira, who in each book sets out on a new adventure. The series combines humor, imagination and the challenges that are in the lives of children and teenagers. With its unique illustrations and imaginative narratives, the Mira books invite children to explore their own creativity and curiosity in a universe where anything is possible, and where friendship and courage are the keys to overcoming even the greatest challenges.

The first Mira book was published in 2017, and to date nine books have been published in the Mira series. In addition to the books, a whole universe of creative books, easy reading books and much more has been created.

New talents in front of and behind the camera

In addition to a talented team of child actors making their debut in front of the camera, Marie Limkilde also makes her debut as a feature film director with MIRA. Marie Limkilde graduated from the Film School in 2017 with the graduation film Everything Has a Beginning. From there, she has been part of both Anna Emma Haudal’s TV series Doggystyle (2018-2019) and the feature film Venuseffekten (2021), and she has not least directed two seasons of DR’s TV series Akavet (2020), which is precisely about being a teenager with all that entails.

The script was written by Ida Åkerstrøm Knudsen, who is behind two Ekko Shortlist award winners, the short films The Boy in the Ocean (2019) and Babylebbe (2021). Ida Åkerstrøm Knudsen graduated from the Film School in 2021 with the graduation film Adjø.

On the production are experienced forces such as photographer Linda Wassberg, who most recently worked on Viften (2023) and has TV series such as Herrens Veje (2015-2017) and Arvingerne (2017) as well as the feature film Dræberne fra Nibe (2017) behind her. In 2021, she won the prestigious Sven Nykvist Cinematography Award for the Finnish film Tove. Thomas Bremer, who is currently starring in the critically acclaimed hit series Ungeren (2024) on DR, is Production Designer at MIRA, and Laura Skiöld Østerud is editor.

Composer Josefine Skov, who has composed music for both Viaplay’s Friheden (2020-2021) and episodes of Far (2020) on DR3, will create the music for MIRA, and the Norwegian illustrator Inga Sætre, who was behind the animated features in the popular film Ninjababy (2021), will provide whimsical and illustrative designs and animations.

MIRA is produced by Toolbox Film with producers Morten Kaufmann and Signe Leick Jensen with support from the Danish Film Institute with consultant Kirstine Vinderskov, FilmFyn and DR. The film is distributed by Scanbox Entertainment.
