The first part of the movie Hole was released in 2019 and was quite successful. It has a rating of 73% at ČSFD and it is a film from a Spanish production, which he co-financed Netflix. It is a relatively short film as it lasts only 91 minutes and it gained its popularity mainly in 2020.
The plot of the first part of The Hole
The film is about a prisoner who has been assigned to a high-security tower prison that has several hundred levels. The higher the level number, the less food the prisoners receive. This is actually the key issue of the entire film. The protagonist tries to equalize the conditions in the prison so that everyone gets a reasonable amount of food.
A platform runs through all the levels that distributes food, but only to one floor at a time. Prisoners can only eat when the platform is on their floor. If they break the rules, they are subjected to extreme temperatures and starvation as punishment. This work was originally supposed to take the form of a play, which was eventually abandoned due to the reluctance of investors to finance the play itself. Therefore, it was decided to make a feature film.
Hole 2 will likely be quite different
Detailed details of the second part have not yet been released, but from the available information it seems that the prison itself will no longer be the focus of the story. The film could explore various political and social issues, as the first part also points to the workings of modern classes and their problems.
In the sequel, we may see an even scarier environment than in the first part. The Hole 2 was actually created mainly because the first part was hugely popular during the pandemic in 2020. However, the filming of the sequel only started in May of last year and is taking place in the Spanish city of Barakaldo.
Release date and cast
The film mainly features Spanish actors who have not appeared in any more well-known films. It is worth mentioning the actress Milena Smit, who starred in the TV series Lost in White Noise, which is based on the book by the writer Javier Castilla. Another well-known actor is Hovik Keuchkerian, who starred in a not-so-successful movie based on the Assassin’s Creed game series. Hole 2 will have premiere on Netflix on October 4. It is not yet known whether it will have a Czech dubbing, but it should at least have Czech subtitles.
