The production of brandy in Serbia records significant growth, with an annual production of 50 million liters, while exports reach a value of 25 million euros. Serbian brandy, as a national brand, is achieving increasing success on the international market. At the CMB Spirits Selection competition held in China, Serbian brandies won eight gold and 10 silver awards. This great success contributes to their branding in the world. One of the award-winning distilleries has signed an export contract to China, opening up opportunities to increase consumption and exports to this country.
The geographical indication of quality for Šumadija šljivovica, which was provided in the last decade by the Association of Šumadija rakija, additionally confirms the standards of domestic production. The state supports distilleries with subsidies, allowing a return of up to 70% of invested funds, but the challenge remains the fight against the black market. Unregistered producers, who sell brandy of dubious quality, not only diminish the reputation of the domestic brand, but also cause financial damage to the state, which loses revenue from excise taxes.
Distilleries such as BB klekovača record growth in production and expansion of the product range. 15 years ago, they produced two types of brandy with an annual capacity of 20,000 bottles. On the other hand, today they offer 22 labels and produce between 40,000 and 70,000 bottles per year. At the same time, the distillers are committed to changing the perception of brandy, while insisting on its exclusivity and value as a national product.
