The Porsche Cayenne EV is coming, but the current Cayenne with SUS engines will remain after 2030

Porsche has announced that the future Cayenne EV will not be the only Cayenne in their range. The existing third-generation Cayenne will remain on sale, offering SUS and hybrid powertrain options beyond 2030, with the announcement that Porsche will continue to improve the twin-turbo V8 engine to comply with future emissions regulations.

Amid recent doubts about the EV future, Porsche has confirmed that the current Cayenne will remain on sale alongside the new Cayenne EV, offering three powertrain variants – SUS, hybrid and EV – well into the next decade.

The company said in a statement: “Porche is simultaneously moving forward with the development of its powerful hybrid and internal combustion engine models. Until and beyond 2030, the successful SUV will be offered with three powertrain variants worldwide.”

Oliver Blume, CEO of Porsche AG, confirmed that the Cayenne EV will arrive in the middle of the decade, promising new standards in the electric SUV segment. Blume added that Porsche customers “will continue to be able to choose from a wide range of powerful and efficient SUS models and hybrid models” for the next decade. This will be made possible by a “further upgrade” of the current third generation, which will be available alongside the Cayenne EV.

This means that Porsche is determined to keep the twin-turbo V8 engine. Zuffenhausen engineers are already improving the powertrain’s efficiency by applying “extensive technical measures.” This will allow the V8 to comply with future legal requirements and remain on sale for longer than expected.

The current third generation was introduced in 2017 and received a major upgrade in 2023. The post-2030 offering will likely require another facelift, putting it on par with newer models.

Despite the renewed multifaceted approach, Porsche’s CEO insists the company is “firmly committed to electromobility.” Blume added that their plan is for more than 80 percent of their new car sales to be fully electrified by 2030. The CEO notes that this could be achieved “depending on the demand of our customers and the development of electromobility in the regions of the world”, showing that Porsche is keeping a close eye on the changing market.

The announcement also includes photos and information about the future all-electric Cayenne. The SUV is currently being tested on public roads, following an “extended phase of digital development and testing”. The camouflaged prototypes will travel “several million kilometers around the world in extreme climatic and topographical conditions”, ensuring that everything will be ready for the big launch, probably sometime in 2025.

Porsche has confirmed that the electric Cayenne will be based on the VW Group Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, integrating the latest technology in terms of “high-voltage systems, powertrain and chassis”. Among the goals for the development of the new Cayenne are “Porche driving characteristics, large capacity and stable charging, high efficiency and a high level of comfort and everyday usability”.
