The President dissolved Parliament


German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier dissolved the Bundestag to begin preparations for snap parliamentary elections on February 23.

“German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier dissolved the country’s lower house of parliament on Friday to pave the way for snap elections on February 23, following the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s tripartite coalition,” the agency notes.

After the early elections, the current German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will most likely lose his post as head of government. The favorite in the election race is the head of the Christian Democratic Union, Friedrich Merz, whose party is ahead of the Social Democratic Party of Germany by more than 10%.

On December 20, German President Steinmeier announce that he intends to dissolve the Bundestag due to its inability to assemble a new government.
