Gică Craioveanu, the former striker of the Romanian national team, told with humor how in the mid-90s, when he was an active player, he made the impresario and recommended his son Ionel Gane to Spain.
Big mistake, because Jerry Gane was a huge disappointment in his two seasons at Osasuna, scoring just four times in 37 games.
Gică Craioveanu made the impresario and transferred his son Ionel Gane to Spain, but he made fun of him
Former international Gică Craioveanu revealed how he brought Ionel Gane to Osasuna. Colleagues at the University of Craiova from 1991-1992, Ionel Gane and Gică Craioveanu had a very close, godfather-like relationship.
Craioveanu talked about how he recommended Ionel Gane to Osasuna. The latter spent two seasons here, 1996-1998, but he deeply disappointed, scoring only four goals in 37 matches.
“I also took him to Osasuna. I helped him, that the sports director came to me. Rafa Benitez was the coach. Cică: ‘Hey, don’t you also have a player in Romania, a good tip?’ / ‘Mystery, Jerry Gane. What Romario, what Bebeto?’. Yes, and they took it.
That year, in ’96, ‘Pușcaria’ scored two goals… (no Did they hit your cheek?) No, because they knew I did it with good intentions, even though I care a lot about Jerry, but it wasn’t successful in Spain”, declared Gică Craioveanu, at iAM Sport.
What a “shock” deal the two Olten strikers had
Teammates for one season at University of CraiovaGică Craioveanu and Ionel Gane had made a pact at that time. At every assist of Craioveanu, his colleague had to offer him a turkey.
Of the nine turkeys he was supposed to receive, Gică only received five at that time, the rest being given to him by the patron of Craiova, Mihai Rotaru, more than two decades later.
“Look, the ‘dragon’ by Jerry Gane (no. Ionel Gane), I gave him nine assists, he gave me nine turkeys. He gave me five and now Mihai (No. Rotaru) paid four.
He didn’t want to give it to me anymore, because he doesn’t have any turkeys. That year, aside from 27 goals, Jerry Gane alone had nine assists. (no And did you have an understanding?) Yes, because I was his godfather and he used to tell me: ‘Godfather, every time I pass I give you a turkey’. He would bring it to me alive, and I would cut it up.
He brought me five, the stingy one! He was going to give me four more, and I’m going to Craiova, I don’t know who I was playing against. I was a cinematographer and my name is Mihai Rotaru. After the meal, I take a siesta, it’s sacred to me. And he says to me: ‘Grande, come down!’ What to see, I go downstairs and see four turkeys running around Craiova at the hotel. I cut them off. After 20 or so years, he gave it to me, the stingy one!”, Gheorghe Craioveanu also declared for the above source.
