the problem of engineering succession needs an owner

Merkuur, which has been offering mobile hobbies for almost seven years, has now shared engineering and technology knowledge with a total of about 40,000 young people. The purpose of the activity is to offer as many options and knowledge as possible already in primary or elementary school, which at some point would help to make better career decisions. This is an activity that should also help to solve the long-discussed problem of lack of engineers and future growth, and to direct young people more towards technology.

Merkuuri’s co-founder Lauri Soosaar is in the program “Tööstusuudised eteris”, who talks about the background and goals of his enterprise. The show is hosted by Harro Puusild.

Soosaar adds that the lack of technology teachers is still a big problem in Estonian schools, and the Mercury calendar is already full until the end of the year. This shows that there is a lot of demand, and more help would be needed here.

According to Soosaare, the lack of engineers and the subsequent growth are like hot potatoes that are rolled between each other. “This problem needs an owner. Everyone talks and wants to, but no one wants to be the owner of the problem,” explains Soosaar, who has traveled around Estonian schools for years to introduce professions, work methods and tools in the field and to raise career awareness and competitiveness among young people.

“The owner of the problem should be the state, this whole chain could be managed by the state. You can’t take, for example, a professional association and say to start managing this educational problem yourself,” he explains and acknowledges that small development projects are carried out, but it is not recommended to fix the big picture.

The show is sponsored by Radius Machining and Hansavest.
