Bad news if you’re impatiently waiting Minecraft 2. Only a few days after the announcement of the project by Notch, the creator of the series at the end of the 2000s, the project has just been put on hold, replaced by another roguelike project inspired by dungeon exploration titles the old way. On the web, fans are outraged.
Minecraft 2: soon announced, soon canceled
The year 2025 was off to a flying start. Last week, Markus Persson, better known as Notch (or the creator of Minecraft) announced on his personal networks that he was going to create Minecraft 2, or rather a spiritual sequel given that the latter no longer has the rights. Indeed, Notch ceded the rights to Minecraft and sold the Mojang studio to Microsoft in 2014 for the tidy sum of $2.5 billion.
Despite this, the man confirmed on the networks that he intended to create his own sequel, while respecting the work carried out by Mojang. He confirmed his desire to create a game for players and respond to fan demand. The problem? A week later, the project almost no longer exists.
For many months, Notch had been working on a new game called Levers and Chests. It is a roguelike inspired by old-school dungeon crawling titles, offering first-person exploration and turn-based combat. Although the project is only in its design phase, it seems that some ideas are quite advanced since certain media were entitled to a preview in spring 2024.
Last year, Notch carried out a survey among players to find out what project they would like to have in the years to come. And unsurprisingly, Minecraft 2 won the poll with 81% of the vote. Finally, after offering fans a little hope, Notch cools everyone down and confirms that the project that will see the light of day will ultimately be Levers and Chests.
Talked to the fellas at the office. Looks like we’re making Levers and Chests!
Tipping point was PC Gamer saying it seemed interesting, lol. Yeah I still love PC Gamer.

I talked to the guys at the office. Looks like we’re going to do Levers and Chests! The tipping point was when PC Gamer said it looked interesting, lol. Yes, I still like PC Gamer.
Of course, this turnaround in situations quickly sparked reactions and many disappointed fans blamed Notch for having orchestrated all of this to promote himself. Faced with the wave of indignation, Notch only responded: “Believe me, a new Minecraft would be a lot less fun than the dungeon-crawling roguelike”.
To date, no specific release date and no support announced for the release of Levers and Chests. And it is not certain that this operation will be very favorable for Notch and his teams.
