In the case of the “Jadar” project, as well as other large projects that can have a significant impact on the further development of the country, the Government of Serbia will be ready to listen to the arguments of professionals and the opinion of citizens, said Irena Vujović, Minister of Environmental Protection, adding that their further implementation is possible only with absolute and uncompromising respect for high standards of environmental protection.
According to the Minister, with the decision of the Constitutional Court, the “Jadar” project is active again, but the Environmental Impact Assessment Study has not yet been submitted to the Ministry it leads. If the company submits a study, she adds, all documents will be reviewed by teams of domestic and international experts.
“The state seriously and responsibly deals with environmental protection when it comes to development projects and we do not convince citizens with empty stories. If the contract with the company Rio Tinto is implemented, we will be absolutely uncompromising when it comes to environmental protection and we will demand the application of world standards, for the benefit of all citizens of Serbia,” said the minister.
As she explained, lithium is currently the most sought-after raw material in the world, and in the future it could be an important factor in the high-tech processing industry and on the territory of our country, which would bring Serbia a significant comparative advantage on the world stage.
The minister pointed out that it is necessary that “we all have to be responsible, to listen to the profession, to look at the arguments, and then it is up to the citizens to decide on potential accelerated economic development”.
