The ranking of electric cars for September 2024 is really not trivial

If the French electric car market is no longer as worrying as it was this summer, it’s not yet the party. Especially since the ranking for the month of September is particularly strange.

The total number of electric car registrations is still down compared to 2023, but there is improvement compared to the trend started during this summer. AAA Data just sent us, on October 1, the registration statistics for electric cars for the month of September. The September ranking has some surprises in store.

Some say that the electric car is in recession in France, that it is dragging down the entire automobile market and that it is a failure to stop quickly. This discourse is often that of electric car skeptics. Even if the electric market is not in the best shape, electric cars are not doing so badly in a context where the purchase of new cars is at half mast: -11% compared to 2023 on all new cars and -6% on electric cars.

In September 2024, 28,265 electric cars were registered, or 20% market share for this engine – its best result since the start of the year.

A slightly atypical top 10 for September

Since the start of the year, the Tesla Model Y was a little behind in France’s monthly statistics. It was dethroned by French models boosted by social leasing: Peugeot e-208, then Renault Mégane e-tech. After a first half without having the leadership, the Model Y takes its revenge with 4,591 registrations in September.

Second place on the podium highlights Citroën’s work to make up for the delay in delivering the Citroën ë-C3 under social leasing. Citroën will not have succeeded in delivering the 5,800 social leasing customers before September 30, but the brand still managed to deliver 60% of these customers with 3,626 registrations completed in 6 days.

The Peugeot e-208 remains in third place on this month’s podium with 1,420 registrations. Just behind is the Renault Scénic e-tech with 1,264 registrations, and the Renault 5 with 1,101 units. However, it should be noted that none of these 1,000 R5 registrations are currently intended for French customers. Renault is preparing a pretty huge launch with the brand’s dealerships so everyone can see and try the model. These models will end up in French homes after a few months as demonstration vehicles.

The Mini brand ranks 6th in the ranking with more than 1,091 electric cars, the brand is rebounding thanks to the new generation of Mini. In the same group, the BMW iX1 continues to find its customers in France, ranking 9th in the ranking.

3 models, on the other hand, dropped out: In 7th place, the Renault Mégane e-tech fell back below 1,000 registrations, with 929 examples, which had not happened to it since July 2023. Fiat 500e, in 8th place, continues to lose ground. field since this summer, she has nevertheless occupied the top 5 for several years. In 10th place is the Tesla Model 3 which suffers from the loss of the ecological bonus.

The volumes on the top 20 models in the September ranking are not necessarily very high. However, the more manufacturers’ catalogs diversify, the less registrations are concentrated on the models at the top of the ranking. And that’s still good news for some outsiders in the electric market.

The numerous commercial launches of new electric products also somewhat deceive the overall statistics for the month of September. The end of the year should still be a little livelier than the last few months.
