The former president of the Turkish football club MKE Ankaragücü was sentenced to prison for the attack on the referee last December.

Faruk Koca attacked Halil Umut Meler in the match between Ankaragücü and Caykur Rizespor (1:1) on the eleventh of December, after which he resigned as the head of the then first league team.

The court sentenced Koca to three years and seven months for intentional bodily harm. In addition, he was given a six-month prison sentence for making threats and a further five-month suspended prison sentence for another offence.

Penalties were also imposed on three other persons involved in this incident. Leading arbitrator Meler was first punched in the face.

After these attacks, the referee ended up in the hospital with a concussion and a fracture in the facial area.

The Turkish Football Association responded by suspending the league and Koca was banned for life. MKE Ankaragücü took 17th place in the season and dropped out of the top competition. The DPA agency informed about it.
