As expected, the Republican Party officially nominated former President Donald Trump as its candidate for the presidential election in November this year at its convention in Milwaukee, USA. It was reported by the Reuters and AP agencies, according to which Trump won the necessary majority of delegates.
Trump, who was assassinated at a rally with voters in Pennsylvania on Saturday, is not scheduled to make a speech until the end of the convention on Thursday. He is to formally accept the nomination on that occasion. However, he announced earlier today that he has chosen Senator JD Vance as his running mate.
Trump’s nomination was expected given the fact that the president from 2017 to 2021 won the Republican primary in a landslide. The nominating convention, attended by more than 2,400 delegates from all American states bound by the results of the primaries, has the task of formally confirming the candidate with the largest number of nominations.
Trump is likely to challenge Democratic President Joe Biden in the Nov. 5 election, whose nomination Democrats are expected to announce at their convention starting Aug. 19. However, party delegates could vote on the matter already at the end of July.
The Republican convention in Milwaukee is taking place in the shadow of Saturday’s assassination, in which Trump was slightly wounded in the ear. Despite the attack, the 78-year-old Republican candidate came to Milwaukee in person. The party conference is taking place under strict security measures.
Independent US presidential candidate and member of a well-known political dynasty, Robert Kennedy Jr., said he spoke with Trump this morning and that the topic of their conversation was “national unity”. Kennedy also intends to meet with the leaders of the Democrats, he does not intend to withdraw from the presidential race despite his slim hopes of being elected.
