The Romanian Auto Register explains everything we need to know about winter tires. When do they become mandatory?

With the first snowfalls, not only winter comes into its own, but also winter tires. The Romanian Car Registry explains which tires drivers should use and when winter tires become mandatory.

The first snows have already started to fall in Romania, and the Romanian Car Registry is coming to answer drivers’ questions about the use of winter tires. It is important to know which tires to use and when to fit them to avoid fines. Currently, driving a car that is not equipped with winter tires can be fined up to 3,300 lei, and your registration certificate will be withheld by the police.

To avoid such situations, it is important to know which tires we fit, when we fit them, but also to pay attention to their degree of wear. To begin with, the law has not undergone changes, so all tires, regardless of their trade name, which are marked with the letters M and S in the form of M+S, MS or M&S, meet the requirements for use during the cold season.

When should we install winter tires?

right Romanian Car Registrythere is no set period in which winter tires must be used, they are mandatory when the vehicle is driving on a public road covered with ice, snow or slush. Also, whether you use a dedicated winter tire or an all-season tire, you can drive without problems on snow-covered roads as long as the tires meet the requirements in force. They must bear the inscription M+S, MS or M&S.

However, it is recommended to install winter tires on cars when the temperature drops below 7-8 degrees Celsius. They are designed so that at a temperature below 7-8 degrees Celsius they remain soft, unlike the summer ones, in order to maintain grip on the road.

Check the tire profile before mounting

It is very important that the tires have enough material on the tread or tread. Even if your car is equipped with winter tires, but they are worn beyond the permissible limit, you risk the same fines as those who drive with summer tires. “Before fitting tires, we recommend checking the year of manufacture (DOT) and tread depth. If the tires are more than 4-5 years old, ask for the opinion of a specialist, who will observe if there are specific signs of wear”, the post made by the Romanian Car Registry states.
