The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra screen is brighter and more efficient

Now it’s finally time for Samsung to start new tests to implement the technology Color Filter on Encapsulation (CoE) on the Galaxy S26 Ultra screena model is expected to be released in about a year. The news comes from the home of Samsung in Korea.

CoE has been used in Samsung’s Galaxy Fold series since the Z Fold 3, but this will be the first time the company has used it in a non-folding slab device.

Note that the report only talks about the S26 Ultra model, so we assume that means that the S26 and S26+ won’t get it. The same rumor claims that CoE will spread to more candybar smartphones in the future, so it won’t be exclusive to the Ultra forever.

So if you’re wondering what CoE is, it replaces polarizers with color filters, thus improving light transmission and making the OLED panel thinner in the process. Samsung has also changed the overall Pixel Definition Level (PDL) to black PDL, which reduces light reflected inside the panel.

This is necessary because this was the main function of the removed polarizer – which had the disadvantage of reducing the brightness by more than 50%. This does not apply to color filters, but reflections still need to be addressed, hence the black PDL.

All this means that the screen will be brighter compared to a comparable one that does not use CoE and black PDL, and also more efficient. The Galaxy S24 Ultra’s panel can already reach up to 2,600 nits of peak brightness, and that means the S26 Ultra could surpass that limit, at least in theory.
