The Minister of Science, Technological Development and Innovation in the Government of the Republic of Serbia, Dr. Jelena Begović, and the Minister of Universities and Research of Italy, Anna Maria Bernini, opened the second Italy-Serbia Science Forum in the AREA science park in Trieste. At the bilateral meeting of the Forum, which was attended by representatives of the ministries and scientific communities of Serbia and Italy, Minister Dr. Begović and Minister Bernini signed the Declaration on Expression of Intent on Cooperation in Research and Innovation.

On this occasion, Minister Dr. Begović reminded that by organizing the first scientific forum of this type in Belgrade in 2023, the foundation was laid for the gathering of scientists from Italy and Serbia with the aim of joint work and progress. “This gathering under the slogan Uniting minds, bridging borders represents an exceptional opportunity for deepening cooperation in the fields of science, innovation and technological progress, which are essential for the future of our countries. Italy is our strategic partner, not only in the political and economic sense, but also in the scientific and innovation development sense. Italy, as an industrially and economically developed country, has certain infrastructures that scientists from the Serbian scientific community want to be a part of,” said Dr. Begović and announced that the first results of the joint scientific-strategic programs of Italy and Serbia are expected already in January.

At the opening of the meeting, Minister Anna Maria Bernini stated that Serbia’s progress in the industry related to artificial intelligence is obvious, and that through joint cooperation between Italy and Serbia, this progress can be even faster. “We confirmed our decision to strengthen friendly ties with Serbia and to work together on scientific and technological progress,” she pointed out.

Director of the Office for Public and Cultural Diplomacy of Serbia, Arno Guyon, said after the bilateral meeting that it is extremely important to point out the enormous contribution that Serbian scientists make to world science. “I noticed in conversations with scientists and researchers from all over the world that everyone has heard of Nikola Tesla, Mihajlo Pupin or Milutin Milanković, but hardly any of them know that they are of Serbian origin. It is necessary to point out the contribution of Serbian scientists, both those from the past and those now,” Gujon concluded.

Minister Dr. Begović invited Minister Bernini to visit Serbia during the organization of the specialized exhibition EXPO 2027 “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All” in Belgrade.
