The secret project “Eye” and the L-29 Dolphin. What is behind it?

The reconnaissance variant of the L-29 R aircraft was created as a modification of the original training machine L-29 Delfín, which was developed and manufactured at Aero Vodochody. This two-seat aircraft was modified to perform tactical reconnaissance tasks. A fundamental change was the addition of aerial cameras, which allowed both oblique and vertical imaging of the terrain. These cameras were located in a container on the underside of the fuselage, directly under the cockpit. Aero Vodochody stated in a press release.

Extended range was another key aspect of the L-29 R modification. While the basic version of the Delfín had a range of approximately 900 kilometers, the reconnaissance version received additional 200-liter fuel tanks that were firmly attached to the wingtips. This improved the aircraft’s ability to operate at longer distances, which was necessary for the performance of reconnaissance missions.

The Aero L-29 Delfín, which measured 10.81 meters in length and had a wingspan of 10.29 meters, was the first jet aircraft completely designed and built in Czechoslovakia. The Dolphin became one of the most successful trainer jets in the world, with different variants being produced for different purposes. In addition to the reconnaissance version of the L-29 R, there was also an aerobatic version of the L-29 A and a single-seat variant for advanced training, the L-29 RS.

Between 1963 and 1974, a total of 3,665 units of the L-29 aircraft were produced in all variants, which testifies to its popularity and wide use in various military and training roles. The Dolphin became a key part of the military air force not only in Czechoslovakia, but also in other countries that included it in their armaments.

One of the reasons for the success of the L-29 Delfín was its versatility. The aircraft was not only used for the basic training of pilots, but also served on the American helicopter landing ship and was even used in the training of cosmonauts. This versatility has contributed to its long-term popularity and presence in many armies around the world.

The L-29 Delfín aircraft thus became a symbol of the technical sophistication and innovation of the Czechoslovak aviation industry. To this day, it is considered one of the most important jet aircraft ever produced in Czechoslovakia, and its legacy lives on in historical memories and at air shows around the world.
