Growing up in a wild pack of dogs, the shy Kiku has been waiting for his human for the fifth year in an animal shelter next to Haapsalu.

At noon on Thursday, Kiku greeted the visitors with lively barks as usual: efficient and precise as a doorbell, he signaled that someone had arrived. It was day 1562 of his asylum life: slushy, gray and dreary.

Kiku arrived at the Läänemaa animal shelter on July 11, 2020 from Kirimäe, where he was wandering around on his own. Since then, he has seen hundreds and hundreds come and go, but Kiku has remained. According to Helina Albi, manager of the Läänemaa animal shelter, Kiku has been waiting for his person longer than any other animal they have sheltered.
