The shooter had flown his drone over the site two hours before the shooting

Thomas Matthew Crooks, the gunman who shot Trump in the ear and killed a firefighter on July 13 at a campaign rally for the Republican candidate, reportedly flew his drone over the rally site two hours before the assassination attempt. The drone was in the air for about 11 minutes, about 200 yards from the scene, according to FBI Director Christopher Wray. Crooks reportedly watched the live feed on his phone.

The gun Crooks used, an AR-15 rifle, was reportedly purchased legally from his father. During the shootout, he fired at least eight shots before being shot by a U.S. Secret Service sniper. Crooks also had explosives in his car and home, but he likely couldn’t have detonated them from the rooftop where he was killed.

Crooks allegedly researched Kennedy assassination

Crooks’ motives remain unknown, although searches of his phone and computer are ongoing.

On July 6, the shooter allegedly searched Google for “How far was Oswald (Kennedy’s assassin) from Kennedy?” That same day, Thomas Crooks reportedly registered to attend Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The FBI investigation is treating the attack as an attempted assassination and a potential act of domestic terrorism. Wray stressed that Crooks acted alone and that no accomplices have been identified to date.
