Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico yesterday again threatened to limit aid to Ukrainian refugees in Slovakia after stopping the transit of Russian gas to Europe via Ukraine. He also mentioned the possibility of stopping all humanitarian aid to Ukraine or the supply of electricity in emergency situations.

At the political level, Slovakia could use the right of veto in many decisions in the European Union, the Slovak Prime Minister said Robert Fico after discussions with the European Commissioner for Energy By Dan Joergensen.

Fico emphasized that Slovakia will take these measures only if it has no other option. According to him, this is an opportunity to show how the leader of a sovereign country should behave. He also announced the creation of a group to resolve the dispute with Ukraine, which did not renew the contract on the transit of Russian gas through its territory, citing the Russian invasion as the reason. It will include representatives of Slovakia, the European Commission and probably also Ukraine.

»It is a serious problem and European Commissioner Joergensen, with whom the Slovak government delegation negotiated, is also aware of this,” said Fico. At the same time, he praised the negotiations with the commission and described them as constructive. He reiterated that the decision of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to stop gas transit is purely political and that it will greatly affect the increase in gas prices and the competitiveness of the European Union.

Originally, the negotiations in Brussels were supposed to take place on Tuesday with the participation of the Ukrainian delegation. However, the office of the Slovak government later announced that the commission canceled them due to the absence of the Ukrainian side and postponed them until yesterday.

After returning from Brussels yesterday evening, Fico convened a coalition summit, at which they were supposed to decide on further measures regarding the transit of gas through Ukraine to Slovakia. According to the office of the Slovak government, the prime minister will shortly inform the public about the decision in this regard.
