The solar system, all in one lamp

Benedetta Tagliabue of studio EMBT Architects he designed Water Moon per Artemis collaborating with the astrophysicist Ersilia Vaudo: «It was a true odyssey», the architect of Italian origin and international fame confided to us.

We asked her to tell us your opinion on lighting.

The

What is the importance of natural/artificial lighting in environments and in the perception of space?

The task of light sources has always been the same: wrap us up and comfort us. The goal of a good architect is designing welcoming home interiors: we feel good in an environment when we are surrounded by a warm and sunny, but also magical and lunar light. Artificial or natural, as long as well designed.

What are your references in the history of industrial design? That is, what are the light fixtures that have left their mark and that to some extent have influenced the approach to lighting design?

There are many lights produced in the history of design, innovating is not a given. I like the idea of tracing the domestic poetry of in my projects Miguel MilanSpanish master who recently passed away. Cestita e TMMboth freestanding in wood, are for me two timeless pieces.

In particular, can you tell us about the Lune d’Acqua project for Artemide?

The project Water Moon for Artemis it is the story of a ménage a trois. Trying to translate the exploration of the Universe into form and function wasn’t easy, but we really had fun. The shape is that of one ballremember the planets, stars and Jupiter’s Moon, the satellite which hides a great ocean beneath the surface, as Ersilia Vaudo says (on the left in the photo). We thought of a stable, but also ‘orbital’ support system. From my point of view it is also a marble, an element that brings the universal scale back to reality, to the domestic dimension. Transforming ideas into a ‘design fairytale’finally, is the successful challenge of Carlotta de BevilacquaCEO of the group Artemiswhich managed to adapt the optical technology invented by Ernesto Gismondi to the curved surfaces of Lune d’Acqua.

Tips on how to have correct lighting in our homes: what to avoid and what to always keep in mind. Better is an atmospheric or accent light and so on.

To warm the atmosphere and illuminate the rooms, the lights must ‘do home’. And to do it best they must be free to migrate around the room. In my architecture the lamps are light and nomadic bodies that I like to place on the ground, for later observe the scenography that draw on the wall.
