The sound of V-Tec will be on the next Honda electric cars

Hyundai was the first to think of a “virtual” engine for an electric, it did so for the Ioniq 5 N, which can “sound” like a car with a four-cylinder turbo at 8,000 rpm and a dual gearbox eight-speed clutch. Honda it wants to do the same by simulating the sound of its most famous combustion cars on its future electric vehicles.

At the beginning of the month, on the occasion of a technical presentation of the next family of electric cars called “Honda 0” attended by our colleagues from InsideEVs in Japan, the house showed a preview of these methods.

A faithful reproduction of the original

There are settings for the 1992 NSX-R, 1999 S2000, 2022 NSX Type S, 2023 Civic Type R, and more. There is also a V-TEC button dedicated to simulate Honda’s beloved valve timing system and a mode that even simulates the plane of the car manufacturer, HondaJet.

Each mode comes with a corresponding instrument panel, faithfully replicating its gas-powered inspiration. You can see it in the video below.

When is it coming?

The mode of simulated combustion it’s a clever way for Honda to tie its future to the past. The company has a huge heritage to draw on, so why wouldn’t it?

However, we don’t know if and when this system will arrive on production cars. Our colleagues at InsideEVs they only had one short static demonstration of the system and, as you can see from the photos, it is a mockup for the moment.
