Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has called on the European Commission and member states to consider imposing additional tariffs on electric car imports from China.
“We don’t need another war, in this case a trade war. We have to build bridges between the European Union and China,” Sanchez said at the end of a recent official visit to China.
As reported by the German agency dpa, Sanchez announced that Spain will try to act constructively and find a compromise regarding the introduction of additional tariffs for the import of Chinese electric vehicles. “All of us – not only the member states, but also the Commission – must reconsider our positions on this issue,” the prime minister said, adding that Spain is already doing so.
According to media reports, Spain has backed the imposition of additional tariffs on imports of Chinese electric cars over the summer months, but has signaled a possible change in its stance ahead of a key vote in October.
The temporary additional tariffs came into effect on July 5 this year after the European Commission, as part of an investigation, preliminarily found that manufacturers in China were benefiting from unfair subsidies within the supply chain.
Brussels must introduce definitive measures no later than four months after the introduction of provisional duties. Any measures will be valid for five years with the possibility of extension.
