The Silenes Stariņi society has implemented the project “Preservation of the crafts of the Augšdaugava region as a spiritual cultural and historical heritage,” the regional government reports.

The project was supported by the regional self-government of the Augšdaugava region – under the “Society Support Fund” program, co-financing was provided by the Silenia Roman Catholic Community. The goal of the project was to familiarize those interested with the crafts of spiritual culture.

In the village of Silene there is one of the most valuable architectural monuments of local importance – the Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which celebrated its 110th anniversary in September 2023.

Thanks to projects previously implemented by the Silenes Stariņi society, an exhibition was put in order in the church premises, which is included in the list of tourist attractions of the Municipal Agency TAKA and is available for public inspection.

This year, a new exhibition was created on the second floor of the church, where visitors can get acquainted with the works of a local artist Alexey Zakharevichas well as with works by unknown masters – there are candlesticks, homemade religious objects, crosses and crucifixes (usually they were made of aluminum or tin in craft workshops, because it was impossible to buy them in Soviet times).

There is also an embroidered scene of the birth of Jesus Christ; icon made of metal and wood. Valuable exhibits include handmade books with spiritual songs and transcribed prayer texts. The church houses many examples of such literature.
