The star of “Squid Game” defends his hero. Here’s how he explains it

The actor playing Hwang In-ho talked a little about his character’s motivation and… sort of defended him.

The second season of “Squid Game” aroused a lot of controversy. Many fans are disappointed with the pace of the game, and of course there is also a plot twist that is widely discussed. Of course, we are talking about the player number 001, i.e. the Leader, who unexpectedly joined the murderous party. Hwang In-ho’s performance left many question marks and fueled anticipation for the next season. But Lee Byung-hun, who plays this character, gave an interview in which he justifies the character he plays.

The actor playing the leader from “Squid Game” defends his character

If you haven’t watched the new episodes of the most popular Korean series in the world yet, I sincerely warn you that it will soon be full of spoilers. Therefore, if you don’t want to “spoil” the fun, come back here after some time. Because it is impossible to quote the actor’s words without knowing the story of Hwang In-ho. As we know – the mysterious Leader and brother of one of the main characters of the story had a wife suffering from liver cirrhosis, who was pregnant – which the hero himself found out about only after her death. Now, as viewers, we also learned that he participated in the Squid Game years ago and was the winner. That’s why Lee Byung-hun commented on the character he plays in an interview with the editorial office The Hollywood Reporter:

If you think about how his life has turned out, his worldview must be deeply rooted in a feeling of extreme disappointment in humanity and the world at large – that he truly feels there is absolutely no hope for humanity. This very strong belief drives his choices – at least that’s how I understood the character (…) I feel like subconsciously he still sees a part of himself in Gi-hun. And in that way, I think a small part of him is almost rooting for Gi-hun. As you watch his actions in season two, I think you’ll constantly wonder what the Leader is actually thinking.

It’s hard to disagree with this – because, contrary to appearances, these characters have many elements in common. Is it enough for In-ho to see his likeness in Gi-hun? Well – a lot here may depend on the interpretation of this story and how we look at the characters. However, it seems to me that there is no exaggeration in what the actor said – and after all, he knows his character best because he spends long hours with him on the film set.

And although the plot of the new season may raise a lot of controversy, interviews such as these undoubtedly fuel further conversations about the story, characters and their motivations. A good way to keep viewers’ attention and discussion before the premiere of season 3. And this one is supposed to be released this year!
