A real hurricane

The wind in Klaipėda reached hurricane level

Meteorologist Gytis Valaika writes that, according to the latest calculations, the snow cover may thicken to 7-10 cm in Western Lithuania by Sunday morning. Elsewhere it will also snow, but less. The snow cover will reach up to 1-5 cm. Some of the models give higher numbers, because it is not clear how exactly the atmospheric vortex shown in the previous post will pass, how intense it will be and how much snow it will manage to add.

7:52 p.m. Gusts up to 26 m/s were recorded in Klaipėda port. The wind will get stronger. The zone of strong winds with snow is expanding to the east.

9:02 p.m. Gusts up to 29-30 m/s were recorded in Klaipėda port.

Due to the strong wind, shipping is restricted in the port of Klaipėda

Due to the strong wind in the port of Klaipėda on Friday from 19:00. shipping was restricted.

“The port of Klaipėda, as usual in such cases, is preparing for the predicted strengthening of the wind. The Port Authority has warned all users of the Klaipėda Port about the future weather conditions, and the transfer of ships to safer places in the port is also being organized,” Klaipėda Port Authority representative Ignė Rotautaitė-Pukenė informed BNS on Friday.

According to the data published on the port’s website, on Friday around 9 p.m. wind gusts in Klaipėda reached 29-30 meters per second.

A huge whirlwind

The storm was brought to Lithuania by a vortex that moved from Sweden.

“Here is this vortex, recorded during the day over the Swedish-Baltic Sea, coming to us. In the near future, it will reach the coast of Lithuania and cause very strong winds, waves up to 4-5 m, and bring snow (mainly to Western Lithuania). Gusts can reach up to 28-32 m/s on the coast and in the sea. On Saturday, the wind will die down,” G. Valaika writes in his account “Weather and climate in Lithuania”.

“Forecasting such eddies is a thankless job: although 100 km to one side or the other, the forecast for area X can change drastically. Maybe that worst case scenario can be avoided and the wind won’t be as strong. The next dozen hours will tell,” he says.

G. Valaika adds that gusts up to 20-24 m/s are already recorded on the coast, and this is just the beginning.

People are sharing images on social networks of how a huge wind, carrying heavy snow, is raging at the Palanga airport.

A huge wind with a blizzard is already raging in Palanga as well. In addition, people share that they also experience lightning at the same time.

“The coast will be the windiest, there the wind gusts will reach as much as 28-32 m/s, (…) around midnight (gusts – BNS) will be the strongest, (…) it is likely that they will even reach the hurricane index – 33 meters per a second”, forecaster Vytautas Patašius said on Friday.

The forecaster advises coastal residents not to leave their homes on Friday, to take precautions.

“You should be on your guard because these cases don’t happen often,” he said.

The snow cover can thicken up to 10 cm

G. Valaika reports that the snow cover can thicken up to 10 cm.

“According to the latest calculations, by Sunday morning the snow cover in Western Lithuania may thicken up to 7-10 cm.

The zone of strong winds with snow is expanding to the east”, says G. Valaika.

Blizzard and thunderstorm recorded

Snow with thunderstorms was recorded on the coast.

“Blizzard and thunderstorm is a rare phenomenon. Especially in a world where many people have never even seen snow. You can rejoice if you have ever experienced such a phenomenon in the snow. US meteorologists go crazy if they manage to capture something like this on video.

Snow with thunderstorms is not so rare in Lithuania. We can usually thank the Baltic Sea and strong cyclone winds for this. Let’s be happy that such a very rare combination of phenomena is not so rare in Lithuania,” writes G. Valaika.
