Antonietta, Elena and Carmen were spending a few days of vacation together in Valencia. Three friends leave from Rome to spend a few days together in the eastern part of Spain. But their trip on Tuesday afternoon (October 29, 2024) turned into a nightmare with the arrival of a violent storm.

Around 7pm, having returned from a visit to the city’s biopark, they tried in vain to reach their apartment located in the area alfalfa. “The road turned into a river – says Antonietta – and after a few minutes we realized that we had to take shelter because the water had already reached our ankles”. The scenario they found themselves in front of was beyond their imagination: “It looked like the apocalypse or something out of a movie, people were screaming and the water was rising more and more. Now everything is devastated, the cars are on top of each other and the shops are full of mud. It was scary.”

The three women find shelter in the entrance hall of a building and so they managed to save us. “After a while the water rose so much that it even entered the landing where we had taken refuge and luckily a lady welcomed us into her home and hosted us until the next day. She gave us a roof and a hot meal , we have to thank her very much.”

“The first alert message arrived around 8pm – explains Elena – and by that time we had already, fortunately, taken refuge in the entrance hall of that building. Chaos had already broken out for almost an hour.”

The three friends also confirm that there would have been no warnings in the previous hours from the local authorities with an obvious one underestimation of the danger. No one probably expected such a violent and devastating atmospheric event. Now the three friends hope to be able to return to Rome tomorrow: “We have a flight at nine in the evening but the roads here are still impassable, we are trying to understand what is the best route to reach the airport but at the moment we are not certain that we will be able to return to Italy.”
