The sunken submarine Titan relied on a hand-filled Excel

The sunken submarine Titan appears to have been a bit of a hodgepodge, especially in terms of processes. A former employee says that the location at sea was kept in an Excel sheet.

The submarine imploded last year while diving toward the wreck of Titanic, killing all on board. A former OceanGate employee has opened up about the submarine’s “navigation system.” It did have a GPS-like acoustic positioning system that produced data about speed, depth and position using pinging sounds. You know this from movies.

Software of craft

In a normal situation, this would be loaded into specially made software, but with the Titan it was different. The data was entered by hand into a notebook and then into Excel and then into mapping software. Finally, a hand-drawn map was used to keep track of where the submarine was. This was repeated every five minutes.

The intention was to develop a system of their own, but there was not enough time for that. The ex-employee called it an idiotic way to do navigation. This is not the reason for the implosion: that was the water pressure that probably became too much for the device because Titan was made with a carbon fiber cylinder in the middle and two half spheres of titanium. This meant that two different materials had to be screwed together and it is difficult to seal that properly, especially when pressure is applied.

Submarine Titan

Titan set sail on Sunday, June 18, 2023 and was supposed to return within a day, but within a few hours the submarine lost contact. There are currently lawsuits about how it could have happened that five people died. Some people claim that this journey with Titan was a kind of experiment: in any case, there would have been a lot of haste to make the journey go ahead. Too much haste, as some testimonies show.
