The Swiss are closing asylum centers due to the “insufficient” number of migrants

The Swiss authorities announced today that they will close nine temporary asylum centers, as the number of new asylum seekers in the recent period was lower than expected.

In Switzerland, they started strengthening their network of asylum centers in 2022 and have since established a total of 36 centers across the country. According to today’s information from the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration, the capacities are currently only half filled. Unlike previous years, this summer did not record an increase in the number of applicants, quite the opposite. In August of this year, 23 percent fewer people applied for asylum than a year ago, and in September the decline was as much as 40 percent. They also stated that, given the current situation on migration routes to Western Europe, there is no reason to expect “dramatic increase” the number of migrants without regular status.

They decided to close nine temporary asylum centers, which have room for a total of 1,735 people. Together with the remaining centers, they will then have capacity for approximately 7,000 people from March next year, and if necessary, if the number of new asylum seekers suddenly increases, these capacities can be quickly increased.
