Jeans, jeans, jeans or jeans – otherwise also trousers made of a strong cotton material called denim or denim. What do you know about them? Do you know their history and origin? And you know why they are so popular?
Jeans, aka jeans, aka jeans, aka jeans were originally work clothes. Outside of work, this fabric and pieces from it began to be worn only in the 1950s. And today? Denim pants must not be missing from the wardrobe across generations all over the world. That is why the current offer of jeans is still wide. And you can find inspiration for new pieces and additions to your wardrobe in many e-shops, brick-and-mortar stores and shopping centers.
One of them is the Fashion Arena Prague Outlet in Štěrboholy, where the “Experience denim” discount sales event will take place, combined with an interesting thematic program.
Denim and Levi’s jeans
Everything was created thanks to Leo (Levi) Strauss, who emigrated to New York with his family after the death of his father. Here he worked with his brothers in the textile industry. Around 1849, news reached Levi that a gold rush had broken out in California, he did not hesitate and went to San Francisco to make a fortune, but not by what you would say (by panning for gold), but by selling various goods for gold seekers.
Together with his brother-in-law, he founded the company Levi Strauss & Company, which initially engaged in the production of coarse canvas for wagons and tents. But then young Levi noticed that the gold diggers needed much more durable clothing for the harsh conditions there. He did not hesitate and started importing crepe cotton from France (“serge de Nimes – crepe from Nimes), which was called Denim after the city of origin. And he started making overalls for miners from it. And the final form of jeans with an identical stitch design was patented on May 20, 1873.
The first Levi’s Jeans were given the number 501. They were officially named after the number assigned to “copper-studded waist dungarees”. The orange thread matching the color of the rivets used by Levi Strauss & Company to sew their jeans is trademarked and one of the most distinctive features. Did you know that creating one pair of Levi’s 501 pants requires 37 separate sewing operations?
Other giants in the market: Lee and Wrangler
The year 1889 marks a fundamental turning point for the denim market, as Harry David founds a rival company with denim clothing called Lee in Kansas. The popular brand began to expand thanks to the production of work trousers, coveralls and jackets, and in the 20s it was the first to bring zip covers. The target group was originally cowboys, miners or railroad workers. In the mid-1940s, another famous Wrangler brand was born. In the beginning, it was made most famous by a tailor of Polish origin, Bernard Lichtenstein, called Rodeo Ben, who improved trousers for cowboys.
Jeans as a fashion item
Levi’s Jeans had a competitive advantage in sales thanks to advertising, the idols of the time became their faces. James Dean imprinted the symbol of teenage rebellion on jeans, and Elvis Presley deepened their popularity even further. They were also made famous by the photo of the irresistible Marilyn Monroe from the movie Mustangs. In the following years, jeans went through a series of modifications that responded to the needs of customers. They mainly experimented with different lengths, colors, materials and cuts.
A boutique in New York’s East Village called “Limbo” started selling distressed jeans in the 1960s. The “scraped” style has become a new fashion hit. A fundamental twist was the addition of Lycra to the material, which made the jeans even more comfortable.
