Afghan women continue to be subject to severe restrictions, despite international warnings.

On August 21, 2024, the Taliban promulgated new laws that prohibit women not only from showing their faces in public, but also from speaking, singing or reading aloud.

The measures are presented by the Taliban regime as necessary to “promote virtue and prevent vice”, according to AFP.

The new legislation was harshly criticized by international organizations, including the UN and the European Union, which condemned the tightening of measures.

The international reactions have been varied, but for now they have not materialized in concrete actions to influence the Taliban regime.

At the same time, the Taliban rejected international criticism, considering it to be “arrogance” on the part of the West.

Despite international isolation, the Taliban regime continues to promote laws that severely restrict women’s fundamental rights.

This situation has generated several acts of activism among Afghan women, who are trying to make their voices heard through various forms of online protest, under the hashtag #LetUsExist.
