The autonomy by one electric car It is closely linked to the capacity of your battery. Thus, to achieve approved ranges of more than 500 km, which in practice end up being around 350 km on the highway, it is almost always necessary to resort to huge and expensive batteries. Result, the cars con greater autonomy are almost always the most expensiveluxury brands.
Having good autonomy is very good, but not paying a fortune for it is even better. We have selected the 15 electric cars with the greatest range for less than 45,000 euros, more or less, and we calculated which car offered the most range for fewer euros. Come on, let’s look How long is the kilometer of autonomy?. And the results are surprising, the best are not always what we all expected.
The three electric cars with the best price-range ratio
Chinese electric cars have a reputation for being the cheapest and with good ranges. Nothing could be further from the truth, if we talk about price-range ratio. Perhaps the new Renault Scenic in its Long Range version and its more than 600 km for less than 47,000 euros is one of the best. Not even close.
Perhaps the new Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive Great Range, which offers more than 600 km for just over 45,000 euros, is the champion of the price-range ratio. Neither. In fact, the car that gives the most autonomy for the lowest amount is neither Chinese, nor a Renault, nor the Tesla Model Y. These are the three cars with the best price-range ratio.
3. Volkswagen ID.3 Pro S 150 KW, from 40,590 euros
This compact 4.27m long It didn’t start off on the right foot. It was expensive and with very disappointing quality on board, the Volkswagen ID.3 It took a while to find its audience. After a restyling that has provided updates, a renewed quality of the materials on board and a notable price drop, the Volkswagen ID.3 is now a much more interesting proposal than in its beginnings.
He Volkswagen ID.3 Pro S 150 kW (204 HP), equipped with the large 77 kWh battery useful for 557 km of autonomy and with a starting price of 40,590 euros (almost 3,000 euros cheaper than the 77 kWh Cupra Born e-Boost) is finally one of the cars with the best price-range ratio. It charges us 72 euros per kilometer of autonomy.
Actually, it’s not bad at all compared to the rest of the models. For example, a BYD Dolphin with 427 km of autonomy costs from 35,690 euros, that is, 80 euros per km of autonomy.
2. Kia EV3 Air Long Range, from 41,705 euros
The Kia EV3 is the second surprise. This compact SUV (4.30 m long), whose style is inspired by the enormous Kia EV9, has a 204 HP electric motor, front-wheel drive and a autonomy of 605 km in WLTP combined cycle thanks to an 81.4 kWh lithium-ion battery. And all this for less than 42,000 euroso 68 euros per kilometer of autonomy.
Inside, it has five seats and a trunk with 460 liters of capacity, to which must be added another front one with 25 liters of capacity, just enough to store the charging cables. On the other hand, a fast charging power limited to 128 kW, which for such a large battery can lengthen charging times while traveling.
1. Tesla Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive Great Range, from 41,470 euros
The champion of the price-range ratio is, without any surprise, a Tesla. Of course, it is not the Tesla Model Y, the best-selling car in the world in 2023, but its little brother the Tesla Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive Great Range. Updated at the end of 2023, it has received aesthetic improvements and, above all, suspension and acoustic insulation, significantly improving its comfort.
With his 4.72m longalmost 300 hp (0-100 km/h in 5.2 s) and one autonomy of 702 km for little more than 41.000 eurosit is difficult to find a car with a better price-range ratio, even in Tesla. With this Model 3, it charges us only 59 euros per kilometer of autonomywhile with the equivalent Model Y, which starts at 46,990 euros, Tesla charges 78 euros per km of autonomy.
Is it worth opting for a car with a small battery?
All brands usually offer access models with a small battery at a more affordable price. Obviously, paying less when buying the car is a very valid argument, especially if the car would not otherwise fit into our budget. However, they are models in which the kilometer of autonomy is paid much more expensiveeven in the models of our Top 3.
For example, the Volkswagen ID.3 Pure 125 kW (170 HP) with a 52 kWh battery is the entry model to the ID.3 range. It costs from 33,880 euros for a range of 388 km (87 euros/km). As for the KIA EV3 Air Standard Range, which starts at 36,930 euros for 436 km, it costs almost 85 euros per kilometer of autonomy.
The exception is the small Citroën ëC3. It costs from 23,800 euros and its 44 kWh battery provides a range of 314 km, it is not much in both cases, but the km of range costs 75 euros. A purchase price and a price-range ratio much better than any MG 4 or BYD, for example.
In order to compare all models on an equal footing, we have limited ourselves to the tariff price, without brand discounts, financing or the MOVES III Plan. Likewise, to be able to compare on equal terms, we have taken into account the autonomy approved in the WLTP cycle.
