Huawei overshadows Samsung with the launch of the world’s first triple smartphone, the new Mate XT Ultimate that folds into three. And yet, even with all that folding and three panels to consider, it manages to almost match Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z Fold6 in thickness when folded.
Today we spotted a photo shared on Reddit and it’s what we say “a picture is worth a thousand words”.
On paper, it goes like this: the Mate XT is 12.8mm thick, while the Fold6 is 12.1mm thick, so – on paper – Samsung is winning this war.
But if you look at the image above, 0.7mm is almost a imperceptible difference to the human eye. And then you have to take into account the fact that Huawei’s device folds in three! Its screen is 10.2 inches compared to the Fold6’s foldable screen which is 7.6 inches.
Samsung fans will insist that the Korean company is much more diligent about sturdiness and durability when it comes to foldables, which is why it looks like its latest innovation in the space was actually the original 2019 Galaxy Fold.
But the opposing side will point out how Samsung’s Folds have looked the same for years, and how they only get minor improvements every year, and how most of those improvements actually solve a problem Samsung created itself (the narrow form factor when folded device) and how Chinese smartphone makers like Huawei with this trifold and Honor with the Magic V3 have been the real innovators in the space recently.
Who do you think is right?
