Mircea Lucescu became Romania’s coach after a period in which the Romanian Football Federation, led by Răzvan Burleanu, made major efforts to bring in the most valuable coach. Mircea Lucescu was recently courted by Rapid and Dinamo, but he refused both, because the conditions were not conducive to sporting performances.
Mircea Lucescu preferred to take over the Romanian national team than any other club in Romania, because the conditions offered were not up to European standards.
Mircea Lucescu refused Dinamo and Rapid because of the poor training conditions
“Il Luce” and Răzvan Burleanu held a press conference at the Football House today, August 6, in which they provided details about the collaboration that the 79-year-old coach will have with the Romanian Football Federation in the next two years days. In addition to the aspects related to the Romanian national team, Mircea Lucescu also spoke about two of the teams with which he performed in Romania, Dinamo and Rapid, thus revealing the reasons why he refused them.
“Of course (not that he could become Rapid’s coach), but I went to the Ministry of Transport, I had discussions with the secretaries of state. I had only one wish: to give me back that base in which I invested a lot. And sentimental, and material, and everything!
To give it back because a football team needs a training base of its own. He cannot prepare among a crowd of children, families, mothers. It is inadmissible! If you want to perform, you have to isolate yourself!
For sure (he wasn’t the coach of Rapid if he got the base). I went to the ministry, I talked to the secretaries, but they didn’t want to give me the Pro Rapid, a base that was, how should I say, Mr. Copos’ in a way. He set it up.
They destroyed things, as we usually do. We destroyed the first serious sports base, maybe after Dinamo’s Săftica. You saw what happened there, only half of the team’s base remained, they took the rest!”, said Mircea Lucescu regarding Rapid’s interest.
Also questioned about the discussions he had with Dinamo officials, Lucescu said that a new stadium would have been decisive in his choice.
“At Dinamo, the same. Without the stadium, I have nothing to look for there! I can’t afford not to win. I can’t, a man who has lived all his life on success gets sick if he doesn’t get it. That’s the situation and I have to create all the conditions for myself to achieve performance. I don’t have them? Tomorrow I say goodbye!”, Mircea Lucescu also said during today’s press conference.
Mircea Lucescu is the most titled Romanian coach in history
Mircea Lucescu returns to Romanian football as a legend after making outstanding performances in football in Ukraine, Turkey and Italy. “Il Luce” won 35 trophies during his coaching career, the most as coach of Shakhtar, 22 in total.
Lucescu will make his debut on the bench of the national team in the action in September, when the Romanian national team will play against the teams from Kosovo and Lithuania, in the Nations League group.
