The Ukrainian armed forces control their modern turrets with Steam Deck –

Video shows Valve’s handheld console during deployment.

A United24 Media reports that the Ukrainian armed forces are using Valve’s handheld console, a Steam Deck, to remotely control their gun turrets during the ongoing war with Russia. The site posted a video the other day showing a remote-controlled weapons platform called Sablja in action.

The gun turret system, which was first unveiled last spring, was developed by Ukrainian engineers, and if everything is true, mass production began at the beginning of this year. The exact operation of the gun is not revealed in the video, but it appears that the operators are watching a live camera feed and using the Steam Deck’s built-in controls to control the turret remotely.

Although it may come as a surprise to many, this is not the first time that controllers from various game consoles have been used in the military industry. The two sectors have been strongly intertwined over the years, resulting in a circular exchange of ideas and expertise.

One of the world’s most popular game engines, Unity, for example several military assignments company over the years – most recently they worked on a battlefield simulation for training purposes. In addition, the US military has long used video game controllers to control drones, unmanned vehicles or submarines.

As for the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the Steam Deck, Valve has yet to acknowledge or at least comment on the situation. You can see the handheld console in action in the video below.
