The United States has announced a military and budgetary aid package worth nearly 6 billion dollars for Ukraine. It is part of an attempt by Washington to support the country before Donald Trump takes office next month, according to AFP.
“Today, I am pleased to announce nearly $2.5 billion in security assistance to Ukraine as the Ukrainian people continue to defend their independence and freedom from Russian aggression,” Biden said.
The package includes a $1.25 billion military “drawdown” that allows the Pentagon to take weapons from US stockpiles and quickly send them to the battlefield. An additional $1.22 billion will be funded through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, under which military equipment is purchased from the defense industry or from partners.
Budget aid worth $3.4 billion
The latest withdrawal includes drones, munitions for High Mobility Artillery Missile Systems (HIMARS), optically guided missiles, anti-tank weapon systems, air-to-ground munitions and spare parts, according to the US State Department.
Meanwhile, the Treasury Department announced $3.4 billion in direct budget support for Ukraine.
