The United States could ban the sale of cars equipped with Chinese technologies

The United States could ban the sale of cars that use hardware and software technologies from Chinese suppliers. National security risk was invoked.

The Biden administration could ban the sale of cars using software developed by Chinese companies starting in 2027. Also, cars equipped with Chinese hardware could be banned from 2030, reports Carscoops.

And it’s not just about cars from Chinese manufacturers, as the United States Government wants to ban these Chinese-sourced technologies from any car on sale in the US. While many key details about the plan remain secret, sources say the regulation would ban the import and sale of vehicles from China with specific communication systems and software/hardware technologies for autonomous driving. Regulators are concerned about how Chinese companies could collect data on US drivers.

Chinese technologies could be banned from all cars sold in the United States

A potential full-scale ban has been under consideration for months after President Joe Biden ordered an investigation into Chinese auto technologies in February. This investigation was prompted by national security concerns.

The proposed ban could be announced as soon as this week. The bans could also extend to other US adversaries, including Russia. In May, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo expressed concern about US vehicles using software or hardware from Chinese companies.

The software bans could be enforced for the 2027 model year, while the hardware ban could take effect in January 2029 or for the 2030 model year. A trade group representing GM, Toyota, VW and Hyundai, has stated that manufacturers will need time to make the necessary software and hardware changes to comply with any ban.

The proposal will be open to public debate for a period of 30 days before the regulations are finalized.
