The United States, gripped by a polar vortex that brings extreme cold

Nearly 300 million Americans will experience an extreme cold wave this weekend, with temperatures below the seasonal average and winds that will intensify the cold sensation, writes CNBC News.

A polar vortex from Siberia will affect the United States starting this weekend, bringing extremely cold temperatures 11-17 degrees below normal for this period. Nearly 300 million people will be affected, including in southern regions where temperatures will drop below freezing.

On Saturday, the polar vortex will reach the north of the country, where temperatures will reach about -12°C, and winds will create thermal sensations of up to -28°C in the northern and central US states. On Sunday, temperatures in central areas will drop to similar values, and southern regions such as Atlanta will see highs of 0°C.

Temperatures will hit -6°C on Monday, the day of the presidential inauguration in Washington DC, with wind chills dropping below -12°C. It is expected to be the coldest presidential inauguration in 40 years, since the 1985 ceremony for Ronald Reagan.
