The Tesla Model Y is a sales hit. In 2023, the model even became the best-selling car in the world, leaving behind two popular petrol models from Toyota. With an impressive sales increase of 64% compared to 2022. But Tesla is not resting on its laurels: a thorough update, codenamed Juniper, is in the pipeline. What can we expect from this innovation?
What changes with the Juniper update?
Tesla is known for subtle, but noticeable improvements. According to insiders, the Model Y Juniper will receive a similar facelift as the recently updated Model 3. This means a sleeker design with a slimmer front, more modern headlights and a completely red LED light bar at the rear. The whole looks more modern and luxurious.
Inside, the dashboard makes short work of wood and Tesla opts for a textile finish. Ambient lighting, a redesigned center console with wireless chargers and possibly ventilated seats provide more luxury. Unfortunately, the steering wheel is also being overhauled: no more levers behind the steering wheel, but buttons that control turn signals, windshield wipers and other functions. A nightmare on roundabouts, otherwise perfectly usable.
More comfort and better performance
The comfort of the Model Y is also getting an upgrade. The Juniper version promises a modified suspension that makes the driving experience smoother, comparable to the updated Model 3. That is good news, because the current Model Y is a bit stiff. In addition, you can count on an improved range and faster acceleration thanks to aerodynamic adjustments and a more efficient drive.
Wait or buy now?
The big question is: should you wait for the Juniper update? If you can, I would definitely do it. However, the introduction is not expected until 2025, with deliveries later that year. Those who want the same features with slightly less space, but sportier driving behavior, can also consider the updated Model 3. It offers the same experience for a lower price.
Do you no longer want to drive a Tesla and is the Model Y not on your list? Then we recommend the Renault Scenic E-Tech. Or go to Smart and look at #3. Peugeot also has a more spacious candidate with the e-5008. If you want something more hatchback style, you could also consider the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
