After the inauguration, Trump will become the 47th president of the United States. Vance will also become the 50th vice president.

Trump and Vance received a total of 312 electoral votes, while their opponents for the White House and the office of vice president – Kamala Harris and Tim Walz – received 226 votes. 270 out of 538 voters’ votes were needed to be elected. For the second election in a row, there were no “faithless voters” – each voter voted for the candidates for whom he was elected.

The joint session was traditionally led by the vice president of the USA, who is also the president of the Senate. Vice President Harris thereby presided over confirmation of her own defeat. She fulfilled her duty, just like defeated Democrat Al Gore in 2001 and Republican Richard Nixon 40 years earlier.

The AP agency points out that this year’s session of both chambers of Congress took place under strict security measures, with security forces surrounding the Congress building with a high black fence.

They introduced these measures as a precaution, since four years ago supporters of then-President Trump stormed the Congressional headquarters in an attempt to prevent the confirmation of the results of the election in which Joe Biden won.

AFP recalls that during the attack on the seat of the US Legislature, four people died at the time – two of a heart attack, one of a drug overdose and one woman who was fatally shot by the police when she tried to break into the chamber. Four policemen subsequently committed suicide. Law enforcement has since charged more than 1,500 people. Several courts sentenced them to prison terms.

This year’s confirmation of election results also took place according to new rules. While in the past the signatures of one congressman from both chambers were sufficient to file an objection to the votes of voters from individual states, after the adoption of the amendment in 2022, up to one-fifth of the members of Congress are required. Therefore, there were no objections this year. The Democrats announced in advance that they would not do so.

The results of the elections in individual states four years ago were contested by several Republican congressmen, who wanted to point out the alleged manipulation of the elections.
