The US has been attacking Yemeni rebels’ weapons depots

Washington – The United States carried out several airstrikes overnight on the weapons depot of the Yemeni Houthi rebels, who are supported by Iran. This was reported by the AFP agency with reference to the Pentagon.

A senior US official told AFP that the targets of the airstrikes were weapons used by the rebels to attack civilian and military vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

The Houthis control most of Yemen’s west coast. Al-Masira TV, run by the rebels, reported on American and British strikes in the Yemeni capital Sana’a and other areas overnight.

The Houthis, designated a terrorist organization by the United States, began attacking cargo ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden last November in what they claim is support for the Palestinians in the war against Israel in the Gaza Strip.

These attacks have had a negative impact on world trade, as they cause carriers to avoid the Red Sea and the Suez Canal and send ships on the safer but much longer and significantly more expensive route around the southern tip of Africa.
