Volkswagen Polo turns 50 at the beginning of next year. During its six generations, the German model has sold over 20 million units.
During the seventies, Volkswagen was forced to replace the already outdated Beetle. In 1973, the Wolfsburg-based manufacturer introduced the Passat. A year later, the famous Golf was born, and then another legend arrived – the Polo.
Back in 1975, Volkswagen presented the world with a small model, placed just below the Golf. Based on the Audi 50, the new model debuted in March and was called the Polo. Next year, the Polo turns 50 years old, a good opportunity to remember the innovations and improvements it introduced to the B segment during five decades on the market.
For example, the second generation (1981) brought more space, comfort and modern engines for that time. Six years later, the limited edition Polo Coupe GT G40 debuted, equipped with a mechanical supercharger with additional power.
The third generation (1994) focused on greater safety, and the Polo was among the first models in the segment to receive airbags. In 1998, the German model was available for the first time in a sporty GTI version.
With the fourth iteration (2002), the Polo grew significantly, with front and side airbags, power steering and ABS included in the standard equipment list.
With the fifth generation (2009), Volkswagen introduced the Polo into the digital age. At the same time, this model made history in motorsport – the Polo R WRC won the title of World Rally Champion four times in a row.
Volkswagen Polo of the sixth generation moved to the MQB architecture, which brought improvements in connectivity, safety and better lying on the ground.
